Installing MicroStation V8 XM Edition Beta 3
by Marc Thomas - 11 November 2005

Installing Beta 3 should be trouble free if you follow the steps recommended in the
readme file. This covers the whole process in great detail.

The main points are summarised below, you need to be logged in with administrative rights to do carry out the installation.

Before doing anything else, uninstall any previous beta versions V8 XM!

Ensure that you have plenty of free space on your c:\ drive even if you are installing on a d:\ or e:\ drive, the beta seems to need minimum free space on c:\ regardless

You are advised to turn off any anti-virus scanning software that may be running for the duration of the installation.

Most importantly, as well as downloading the Beta itself, download the updated Pre-requisite pack and install that first. This contains a set of Microsoft updates that are needed to support V8 XM, some of which you may already have installed if you have a well patched system.

Run the V8 XM installer, during the installation you will be allowed to choose the locations of the program and workspace folders. I have chosen E:\XMbeta3 for the program and E:\XMbeta3workspace for the workspace to make them easy to find and keep them clear of existing V8 installations.

In addition you will find your user preferences in a folder called C:\Documents and Settings\marct\Local Settings\Application Data\Bentley\MicroStation\8.9\McmJ4iKhUYGaVUPnJbwO9w\prefs (the alphanumeric string will be specific to your installation). Whilst I'm not changing this windows compliant location for the beta, I will modify it in my production configuration.

If you have any graphics issues download a current driver for your graphics card. Bentley recommend using the latest relase. Another approach is to download the release before the latest, as there are can often be bugs in brand new graphics drivers. So far I have not run into any driver issues on the machines I've used for testing.
